How long have you been on the board and why did you join?
I joined the Australian Poll Dorset board in February this year. I’ve always had a passion for the Poll Dorset breed, having grown up around the breed. After becoming involved at a regional level, I wanted to take the next step to contribute to our breed. Joining the board has given me the opportunity to represent younger breeders, bring a fresh perspective, and help shape the future of the breed. I’m passionate about encouraging more young people to become involved in Poll Dorsets and the sheep industry as a whole. At the same time, I’m incredibly fortunate to work alongside and learn from many highly respected and experienced breeders.
Where do you see the future of the Poll Dorset breed and how does it fit with the modern prime lamb industry?
The future of the Poll Dorset breed is extremely positive. With the lamb industry experiencing record highs, sheep numbers relatively low, and many producers now looking to rebuild their flocks, there has never been a better opportunity for the breed to showcase its strengths. Poll Dorsets have long been recognised for their early maturity, rapid growth and ability to consistently produce high quality prime lambs. As producers focus on profitability and efficiency, these traits become even more valuable. Whether it’s turning off trade lambs at a younger age or producing lambs suited to the export markets, the Poll Dorset continues to meet the demands of modern commercial production.
What are some of the changes you have seen which have benefited the breed in the past decade?
One of the greatest strengths of Poll Dorset breeders has been their ability to adapt to changing market demands while remaining true to the core attributes of the breed. While Poll Dorset lambs have always been renowned for their early maturity and excellent carcass quality, breeders have also developed sheep with greater growth potential and improved capacity to perform in feedlots. This has opened further opportunities to supply both domestic and export markets, giving commercial producers greater flexibility to target a range of market specifications.
How does the breed make sure it stays relevant with the industry and how does it make sure that it is the first choice for prime lamb breeders?
The key is never losing sight of what commercial producers are paid for, consistency, growth, carcass quality and efficiency. Poll Dorset breeders have always focused on producing rams that deliver those outcomes year after year. Early maturity remains one of the breed’s defining strengths, but alongside that we’ve continued to improve growth rates, structural soundness, muscle, fertility and overall performance. If we can consistently produce high performing animals that are profitable for commercial producers, there is every reason for Poll Dorsets to remain Australia’s leading terminal sire.
